The Trouble with Practicing

What a fun journey!

Piano lessons haven’t changed much in the last century.

  • A typical lesson for a beginner is half an hour.

  • Teachers check progress and teach the music facts.

  • Students have 6 days remember and re-learn everything at home (yikes!).

  • Parents are left feeling overwhelmed and unsure about how to find time, help or motivation for this process.

But here’s the real kicker.

Here’s what music instructors don’t even want you to know…

  1. Even when students do practice, they will usually be playing things incorrectly.

  2. If they play a lot, they may practice the same mistakes over and over and over and over again.

  3. A student may need twice their original effort just to “un-learn” their well-practiced mistake.

  4. This leads to a reliance on the teacher to “fix” everything week by week!

It’s no wonder why so many kids get discouraged or are un-motivated about practicing.

Finding a Solution

It takes time and care to develop the skills needed to be a good and patient practicer.

It takes a bit of experimentation. A bit of science.

The Southern Maryland Music Lessons’ Beginner Piano School is lovingly called the “Piano Lab” for this very reason.

…It’s the perfect blend of independence and support!

A Place to Practice Practicing

In each and every lesson, we give our students the time and attention they need to:

  • build up stamina and play longer

  • find meaningful creative solutions

  • discover their own unique practice style (and use it!)

  • learn and memorize their favorite songs

  • go home and enjoy playing the music they figured out in Piano Lab
